Safeguarding the Huai River with Liancheng Quality | Celebrating the Completion of the World’s Largest Waterway Interchange at Huai’an Hub

In June 2026, the second phase of the Huai River Sea-Entry Waterway Project reached a major milestone. The main structure of the grade-separated culvert at Huai'an Hub successfully passed its underwater acceptance inspection, marking the completion of what is known as the "World's Largest Waterway Interchange."

Throughout the construction of this landmark water conservancy project, Shanghai Liancheng (Group) Co., Ltd. has contributed to flood prevention and construction safety through reliable pumping equipment and professional technical services.

1. Project Background: Supporting a Major National Water Conservancy Project

The second phase of the Huai River Sea-Entry Waterway Project is one of China's 172 major water conservation and water supply projects approved by the State Council. With a total investment of RMB 43.985 billion, it is also the largest single water conservancy project undertaken in Jiangsu Province since the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The project extends from the Erhe Sluice of Hongze Lake in the west to Biandangang Port in Binhai County in the east, where it discharges into the Yellow Sea.

Upon completion, the waterway's designed flood discharge capacity will increase from 2,270 m³/s to 7,000 m³/s, improving Hongze Lake's flood protection standard from a 100-year flood event to a 300-year flood event.

The Huai'an Hub Project, with a total investment of approximately RMB 1.7 billion, serves as a key control structure in the second stage of the Huai River Sea-Entry Waterway.

Building on the existing 15-cell culvert constructed during the first phase, the project includes the construction of 30 additional culvert cells to the north, along with flood control access bridges and other supporting facilities.

In May 2026, the main structure of the grade-separated culvert successfully passed its underwater acceptance inspection. Its flood discharge capacity increased to more than three times the previous level, making it the first major hydraulic structure along the Huai River Sea-Entry Waterway capable of handling a discharge of 7,000 m³/s.

Shanghai Liancheng Group was awarded Pump and Ancillary Structure Procurement Contract Package No. 2, valued at RMB 19.2102 million.

Under this contract, Liancheng supplied essential drainage pumping equipment for the temporary drainage project in the area north of the canal and west of the Grand Canal during the Huai'an Hub construction period.

2. Proven Performance: Liancheng Pumps in Action During Heavy Rainfall

During the 2025 flood season, Huai'an experienced prolonged heavy rainfall and severe rainstorms, prompting the city to raise its flood control emergency response to Level III.

In response to these challenging conditions, the temporary drainage system serving the construction area of Huai'an Hub was promptly activated.

A total of 176 pumping units were put into operation, achieving a combined drainage capacity of 169 m³/s.

The system effectively alleviated waterlogging in urban Huai'an while ensuring the construction site of the Huai River Sea-Entry Waterway Phase II Project remained protected during the flood season.

Behind this successful flood control operation were 100 sets of skid-mounted submersible tubular pump units supplied by Shanghai Liancheng Group, operating continuously and reliably under demanding conditions.

Their stable performance demonstrated the value of dependable pumping equipment in large-scale emergency drainage and flood control applications.

3. Liancheng Solution: High-Performance Skid-Mounted Submersible Tubular Pumps

The project utilizes Liancheng's 500QGL-50 Skid-Mounted Submersible Tubular Pump Units, specifically designed for emergency flood control and drainage applications in flatland regions.

These pumping units offer several important technical and operational advantages.

Integrated Design for Easy Installation

The pump and motor are integrated into a single unit, allowing the entire assembly to operate fully submerged.

This design eliminates the need for a dedicated pump house, significantly reducing pumping station construction costs and installation time.

The skid-mounted configuration also facilitates rapid deployment, making the equipment particularly suitable for temporary drainage works and emergency flood response.

High Efficiency, Reliability, and Adaptability

The 500QGL-50 pump units feature the following technical specifications:

Parameter Specification
Pump Model 500QGL-50
Pump Type Skid-Mounted Submersible Tubular Pump
Impeller Diameter 445 mm
Rotational Speed 980 rpm
Rated Motor Power 75 kW
Flow Capacity per Pump Over 3,600 m³/h
Main Application Emergency Flood Control and Drainage

Designed for demanding drainage conditions, these pumps provide reliable operation and are suitable for applications requiring frequent starting and stopping.

Their hydraulic performance and adaptable installation design make them an effective solution for temporary drainage stations, emergency pumping operations, and large-scale flood control projects.

Intelligent Control for Unattended Operation

Each pumping unit is equipped with an intelligent controller and an outdoor cable junction box.

The control system supports remote centralized control and automatic operation, helping reduce manual intervention while improving operational efficiency.

This intelligent control capability is especially valuable during emergency flood control operations, when rapid response and coordinated pump operation are essential.

4. Liancheng's Commitment to Reliable Water Conservancy Infrastructure

From emergency drainage operations along the Huai River Sea-Entry Waterway to advanced testing technologies for nuclear-grade equipment, and from the reliable operation of skid-mounted submersible pumps to innovations in AI-powered intelligent operation and maintenance systems, Shanghai Liancheng Group remains committed to technological advancement and high engineering standards.

Guided by its philosophy of "Technology Leadership and Standards First," Liancheng continues to provide reliable products and professional services to support the safe operation of major water conservancy projects.

Safeguarding the Huai River is a responsibility Liancheng proudly embraces.

Looking ahead, Shanghai Liancheng Group will continue to contribute its expertise, high-quality pumping equipment, and comprehensive technical services to more major national water conservancy and infrastructure projects, helping strengthen flood control capabilities and protect communities through dependable engineering solutions.
